Rukun Tetangga or community centres were projects launched in the early years of the 70s and 80s to help minimize the possibility of crime in residential areas. Until today, Rukun Tetanggas are still prominently active in such areas where they run more fellowship programmes than night patrols. Rukun Tetangga was previously very much associated with night patrols where residents of a specific area group together and walk around in groups every night in order to keep the area safe.
Apart from that, Rukun Tetangga also serves as the Resident’s Association of the specific area. But with more areas setting up official Resident’s Association, this role held by the Rukun Tetangga are now not as prominent. Today, Rukun Tetangga have taken a more subsided role in that it promotes more neighbourliness than security. This are programmes like cooking classes, sewing and singing classes and such. to say the least, the Rukun Tetangga’s responsibilities and roles have diminished much since its inception but still, it has managed to bring people of a certain residential area together for a good cause. Rukuntetangga.com.my is a portal where you can find out all the activities that are being run by these community centres as well as to keep in touch with people from a particular community. To be eligible for membership in a specific Rukun Tetangga, you must be a permanent resident of that particular Taman or garden as this is the policy upheld by more Rukun Tetanggas.

Under the purview of the Jabatan Perpaduan Negara and Integrasi Nasional or the National Integration and Unity Department, the department is responsible to plant the seeds of unity and such sentiments into Malaysians through community based programmes and events. However of late, more ministries have come into the picture providing more funding and support in helping to make the society a more harmonious place.
The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development is one that plays a big role in promoting Rukun Tetangga in residential areas. led by Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen, the ministry was established to uphold various causes and policies that affect national unity through the few agencies of Department of Women Development, Social Welfare Department, National Population and Family Department and the Social Institute of Malaysia. Its responsibilities include running and sponsoring programmes that promotes national unity and harmony, planning and implementation of women and family development programmes and many others. Sections in Rukun Tetangga.
There are many sections in a typical Rukun Tetangga. To begin with there is the community centre, or the building per se. this is where meetings are held every week by the committee members of the specific Rukun Tetangga. Also the building which is usually situated at the park of a residential area are also used for classes or competitions and to run activities. This is where the base is if there are night patrols or anything else. The typical Rukun Tetangga is then run and managed by a central committee.
The Central committee of a typical Rukun Tetangga is similar to any other committee which has a chairman, the deputy, a secretary, a treasurer, a quartermaster and a group of committee members. These group of office bearers are the people who will be organizing all the activities that run in the residential areas. they will be responsible to invite the relevant people to give talks when there are any as well as to request for funding and support from the relevant agencies and ministries whenever needed. If they are holding an event like Buka Puasa, they will be responsible to invite the representative of the area or the minister involved who have helped them achieve a successful event.
There is also a Women’s movement (Jiran Wanita) in the Rukun Tetangga. Basically meant for women in the specific area, this movement would also have its own group of committee members which follows a similar structure with the central committee. The women’s wing would usually run events and activities that are catered for women like cooking classes, sewing classs, dancing classes, singing classes as well as trips.
